Gatwick Rail Station Passenger Lifts
Gatwick Rail Station New station Concourse
Working with Costain, Network Rail’s principal
contractor on Gatwick Airport’s recent rail station
construction and refurbishment, Liftec Express are
proud to have successfully completed and handed
over six new bespoke passenger lifts.
The new lifts form part of an overall plan to significantly improve the station’s ability to manage increasing passenger numbers and provide a safer, and an enhanced passenger experience from train to plane, between the station platforms and Gatwick International Airport.
Gatwick Rail Station is one the ten busiest stations outside of London, with an annual footfall of over 20 million passengers and remained operational throughout the construction and refurbishment period. Our work required Liftec Express Engineers to work out-of-hours and under strict Network Rail safety procedures for rail side work.
To ensure that the equipment and various components
were available for our engineers at the start of each shift,
we took on a storage unit two miles from the airport.
This allowed us to move the equipment to an area
adjacent to the newly constructed second concourse
where the site crane was located. The crane was
essential for the multiple movements needed over the
period of the project, for safely positioning each lift
motor and controller in the six custom-made above
shaft motor rooms.
All six new bespoke lifts were supplied to Network Rail’s national specifications. This included, ZIEHL-ABEGG machines, Witter Hydra anti vandal and fireproof Six New Lifts Liftec Express Ltd Regus House, Victory Way, Crossways Business Park, Dartford, Kent DA2 6QD (www.liftec.co.uk) TBC - Six New Lifts Gatwick Rail Station (Cont.) landing doors, TVC Ethos 2 lift controllers, Dewhurst COP and landing fixtures fitted with EN81-71 cat 2 push buttons in Network Rail’s chosen colour, gardenia white.
The new lifts now in service, serve platforms five, six and seven and operate between the platform level and concourse level. One of the many objectives of the construction and refurbishment was to lower waiting times at the lift entrances and to assist with this and improve passenger flow, the lift cars have dual car entrances.
Liftec Express are pleased to have been involved in
this important and complex £250m infrastructure
project. We are all delighted with the support of our
dedicated engineering team, which allowed us to
successfully deliver all six lifts to programme.
